Great Book ”Healing Water”

A Hawaii story, Healing Water, is talking about a  Hawaiian boy who is 13 years old and life changed by leprosy. Also, the author describes a boy who is forced to separate from his family to go live on Molokai because he is one of many native Hawaiians who has contracted a deadly disease “leprosy”.  When I was reading “ Healing Water ” in the beginning,I did not understand the story, and I felt very bored reading the leprosy novel. Because I was especially taking the book club and reading a novel about leprosy patients. I think the author has the ability to make me care and curious about the characters. In addition, the author is very good at taking the reader to feel and fantasize of each chapter. In fact, after the second, I was very curious to know what happened to each character, and how Pia survived without Kamaka. Also, I really wanted to know if Pia and Kamaka would be friends again. Moreover, Kamaka was a family friend, but he was afraid about leprosy. When Pia got leprosy, he was hiding and disappeared. Their friendship was broken. Pia lived a very hard life on Molokai that made Pia hate Kamaka very much, did not like to live on Molokai, and did not want ro make other friends. I can imagine how hard every episode and Pia’s feelings. On the other hand, Boki was very bad to Pia, and he let Pia become a thief. He treated Pia very badly, and he did not want Pia to have his own opinion because he just wanted Pia to follow his order. Fortunately, Keona and Maka Nui became pia’s friends, and they also became Pia’s spiritual pillar on Molokai. When Father Damien arrived there, he changed Pia’s belief. Father Damien also showed Pia how to forgive people, believe God, help people, and make friends. Pia started to think about his life and relationship with Kamaka. When Boki died, Pia should be happy, but he did not feel joy. I think with the increase of age and experience, Pia’s thinking is different from before. Finally, he forgave Boki and went to his funeral. Pia used very especially the way “Swim” to forgive Kamaka. Kamaka was very happy to be friends with Pia again, and their friendship went back to normal. I think this is one of the best story books I have ever read, and I will keep this story book. When my daughter grows up, I will let her read this story. Also I will introduce this story book to others because this story is very good to tell the people how the leprosy patient survived on Molokai and teach people if you want to be treated that you must treat others the same ways.

  1. Yes, Father Damien was the one who made Pia changed his anger to forgiveness. He didn’t tell Pia what to do, but he showed Pia from what he did that love could change everything. Father Damien was successful in changing Pia behavior. I really like Father Damien character though.

  2. Hi Susana- I’m so happy you enjoyed the novel!! I love that you are going to save the book for your daughter to read someday. I really like this novel too- I think it teaches us some valuable lessons about love and forgiveness, and also a great lesson in learning to rely on ourselves to get through difficult situations.
